During interphase, the cell grows and makes a copy of its DNA. During the mitotic phase, the cell separates its DNA into two sets and divides its cytoplasm, forming two new cells. The mitotic phase is further divided into mitosis (the division of chromosomes in the nucleus) and cytokinesis (the division of the cytoplasm).
