Summary
Answer choices are a built-in tool for ACT Science, not something to ignore until the end. Using them strategically helps you find the right figure faster, focus only on what matters, avoid common mistakes, and solve difficult questions more efficiently.
  • Treat the answer choices as part of the question from the start rather than solving everything independently first; the correct answer is already present, so the goal is to identify it efficiently.
  • Use answer choices to locate the right graph, table, or figure, especially when the same term appears in multiple places; distinctive words in the choices often reveal exactly where to look.
  • Compare the choices to determine what actually needs to be analyzed; when several elements are repeated across all options, those repeated elements do not decide the answer, and only the differing parts matter.
  • Watch for opposite or nearly opposite answer choices, because they signal a high-risk question where misreading labels, trends, or directions can lead to an avoidable mistake.
  • Study the numerical patterns in answer choices on quantitative questions; values are often built from numbers in the passage, and recognizing relationships such as double, half, or exponent confusion can guide you to the answer.
  • Apply this approach when stuck: if a keyword does not help you find the relevant information, trace the numbers or distinctive terms in the choices to uncover the correct section and reasoning path.
