Summary
Key terms are the fastest way to navigate ACT Science questions accurately under time pressure. Focus on identifying and tracking names, numbers, units, figure labels, and category terms instead of trying to fully understand every passage before answering.
  • Key terms include figure and table numbers, experiment names, substances, objects, categories, proper nouns, capitalized terms, numbers, percentages, and units because these tell you exactly where to look and what to find.
  • For every question, underline the key terms in the stem and circle what the question is specifically asking you to determine so your attention stays fixed on the target information.
  • In practice questions, terms such as Figure 1, Table 2, absorbance values, 4 ppm, chromium, copper, Bombay blood type, ABO, and HH genotype function as search markers that direct you to the relevant graph, table, or passage detail.
  • After identifying the key terms in the question, match them to the same terms on the graph, figure, or passage, then trace the relevant data carefully to extract or estimate the answer.
  • When a graph does not show an exact value, use extrapolation and estimation, since ACT Science answer choices are designed to make reasonable estimates workable rather than requiring perfect precision.
  • Key terms can also appear in the answer choices, especially when the question stem is vague, so checking the options may reveal which variable, line, or category you actually need to evaluate.
  • Using key terms consistently reduces careless mistakes, improves active reading, and helps you move through dense charts and data displays more efficiently.
