Summary
ACT pacing requires balancing speed and accuracy across sections with very limited time per question. Build pacing gradually, analyze how timing affects mistakes, and use planned clock checks to stay on track during practice and on test day.
  • The ACT creates strong time pressure: English gives 35 minutes for 50 questions, Math 50 minutes for 45 questions, Reading 40 minutes for 36 questions, Science 40 minutes for 40 questions, and Writing 40 minutes for one essay, with Science and Writing treated as optional sections that change the total testing time.
  • Preparation works best in stages when needed: start with untimed practice to strengthen foundational skills, then move into a mix of timed and untimed work so you can compare performance under pressure.
  • A powerful stage-two method is to complete a timed set, redo the same questions untimed, record answers separately, and compare the two sets to spot rushed errors, missed details, and answer changes caused by time pressure.
  • As test day gets closer, shift into fully timed practice under real testing limits and reflect carefully on missed questions before checking solutions so you can identify careless mistakes, misreading, weak concepts, and habits that need adjustment.
  • Pacing should match your current readiness: some students can begin timed work immediately, while others need more untimed review first, so strengths and weaknesses should guide the structure of practice.
  • The clock helps when used strategically rather than constantly; checking after proportional chunks of questions gives structure without creating panic and helps you adjust if you are moving too fast or too slowly.
  • Useful pacing checkpoints include Science at every 10 questions for 10-minute intervals, English at about 7 minutes per 10-question passage or 3.5 minutes per 5-question passage, Math at every 9 questions for about 10 minutes, and Reading at 10 minutes per passage.
